My name is Rob Dowling and I am am a mindfulness and meditation coach based in Truro, Cornwall. As we all know modern life is complex and fast moving. Indeed it is almost accepted that life will be stressful and yet the affects of stress are profound physically, emotionally and indeed spiritually that they cannot and must not be taken for granted.
From early childhood to our last breath we are on a never ending treadmill of education or work. Children who used to be allowed to be just children are now tested and assessed from very early in their lives. As adults we spend most of our time at work away from our families and loved ones. Our work can be a kind of narcotic, concealing the unrest and turbulent nature of our mind. We experience external stimulation from an increasing number of sources and life can be very stressful. Evidence suggests that we have between 50,000-70,000 thoughts a day. This works out at between 35-48 thoughts per minute. Is it any wonder with this amount of inner traffic we lose touch with our self? Calming our thoughts and slowing down the inner traffic is vitally important.
There is an alternative away to help us deal with stress away from medication, alcohol or drugs which is found in the practice of mindfulness and meditation. What if we could find a way to change our thinking processes so that our perception of stress were to change. From our early childhood we have been educated to only examine and verify things in the external world. No one has taught us how to look within, to find within, and to verify within. Therefore, we remain strangers to ourselves, while trying to get to know others. This lack of self-understanding is one of the main reasons our relationships don’t seem to work, and why confusion and disappointment so often prevail in our life. We are taught how to move and behave in the outer world, but we are never taught how to be still and examine what is within ourselves. When we learn to do this through mindfulness and meditation, we can attain the highest of all joys that of peace of mind a state of being that can ever be experienced by all human beings.
